It's a rawer, grittier American Gods. Another reviewer likened it to early Stephen King, before he started phoning it in -- agreed. Great characters. Great tension. Great dialogue. Great action. A LOT of blood is shed, in vivid detail...but it doesn't detract from the many charms of the players -- human and otherwise -- and the paths they're set on. Flaws so minor I can't even bear to point them out, this book is so much fun. And it's pretty hefty: a big seven hours' worth of intense thrill ride. What a great read. Blackmore is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The "Mountain Man" series actually pulled me into the "zombie" genre, one that I had avoided intentionally for many years.
The Missing Boatman is a very very clever take on a number of themes that have been done before but not in this way.
It's hard to go into detail without creating spoilers so I'll just say read it, you won't be disappointed.
The idea of the Grim Reaper as a sensitive being is a very unique perspective. This story will convince you of the need for death.
This is a well thought out story. So much going on and the opportunity is there for Keith to take anyone of the characters in this novel and create separate stories for each. I will continue to look for all and anything Keith writes in the future as I believe that he is the most talented writer today. The future is very bright for the reader of fiction as long as Keith keeps writing.
The book sounded interesting. Once I started reading, however, I had to force myself to continue. The writing plods along. The characters are not likeable.
There's a lot of good books out there, and I cannot justify wasting my time reading a bad book.

The storyline is unique, loaded w/terror and violence, repulsive, suspenseful, and action packed. Characters are compelling and like it or not, relatable. This book grabs you and does not let go! Blackmore is wildly talented, if you haven’t read his Mountain Man Series yet, do so NOW! 5 Stars, I highly recommend!!!
First, I enjoyed the book, and am glad I took the time to read it. For me, it seemed the story started out one way, and then sorta changed about 70 (or so) pages in. The author did a pretty fair job of bringing us into his world, but for me, there are a few gaps in the story here and there.
Like, who is "H2"?? I dislike feeling dumb while reading a book, and I feel that some of the characters did not have their... roles... explained well enough for me (Hence the four stars).
This *is* a fast paced book, and like all good books, I found myself thinking both about the book in general, and about certain characters at times when not reading the book. This to me is a sign of a good book. I never found myself wishing the book was over soon, nor did it feel like 'work' to read it. I simply hope in future works, the author does a bit better job of explaining certain characters a bit better.
"Missing Boatman" combines elements of a gritty Tarantino-esque gangster / road story, a Neil Gaiman mythical fantasy and a Stephen King horror / thriller back before King started simply trading on his name and phoning it in.
"Boatman" introduces us to some immediately repulsing (and simultaneously compelling) characters who's full nature and purpose become hopelessly intertwined with human counterparts in what becomes a race to a climactic finish. The quintessential page-turner, "Boatman" hooks you quickly and never lets go.
This guy has real talent. Read this first, then check out his book "Mountain Man" for your new favorite entry in the zombie genre.

I don't know what I expected when I started reading THE MISSING BOATMAN but I was definitely surprised. If you are expecting (and wanting) a book like Mountain Man or Safari (Mountain Man Book Two) - two other books by Blackmore - you are going to be disappointed. This book is much more than either of those two (and I enjoyed them).
THE MISSING BOATMAN has tongue-in-cheek humor, satire, life and death issues, a super cast of well-drawn characters, oh and - blood, guts, gore and some very creative rank cursing.
It definitely could have used a healthy dose of proofreading and I usually warn readers against such books. But this story is good enough that you'll want to overlook these mistakes. Note to author, though get this novel proofread and fixed.

If you liked the movies Death Takes a Holiday ( Exclusive) or Meet Joe Black, I think you'll enjoy the premise behind THE MISSING BOATMAN.
